INSERTION
Another less-talked-about delivery method for cannabis is via suppositories, including vaginal suppositories, such as products by Foria, and rectal suppositories, such as ones sold by Endoca. The vaginal and rectum walls are permeable, like our mouths, so absorption is rapid and effectively targets the lower region of the body. Cannabis suppositories, like any suppositories, are made with dissolvable materials such as gelatin capsules or ingredients like cocoa butter.
Vaginal suppositories dissolve and absorb to provide pain relief and promote body relaxation without mind-altering effects. Vaginal suppositories can be used in relieving pain and inflammation throughout the reproductive system, including the uterus, and for reducing menstrual cramps and pelvic pain from conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. THC-infused tampons are also available on the market and can provide relief from menstrual cramps. As with any tampons, changing them regularly is important to avoid health issues such as toxic shock syndrome (TSS). There are no studies or reports stating that THC-infused tampons are any more or less likely to cause TSS. Most cannabis and CBD vaginal products are available at licensed dispensaries although hemp-derived CBD products could be carried at more mainstream retailers.
Rectal suppositories can deliver medicine quickly to relieve pain from irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and other digestive and intestinal discomfort, pain, and disorders. Suppositories are moderately fast-acting—taking twenty to thirty minutes to have an effect—and last anywhere from an hour to a few hours, depending on the strength and all the normal variables from individual to individual.
Now that you’re more familiar with the different forms of cannabis and the many different ways you can take cannabis into your body, we’re going to go over how to dose cannabis for optimal effects and introduce you to the concept of microdosing to get more health benefits with less of the high.
